Blog

Now that we have returned from our world trip, we have started to use our site more generally and this part holds our post-world trip diary/blog, updated as and when there's something.

After a break of several months I started to keep our site updated again with new content, diaries starting from from Oct 2006. As Palin puts it, a diary, or blog, "preserves the present from perspective". How true.

Anyway, here goes, jumping back to our return to the UK after our world trip. There may be a little overlap with the final section of our World Trip diaries.

2009                         2009

Old update notes from main page

6 May 2006: Lots of diary and pictures updates, covering Namibia and South Africa. We have also removed the old Bolivia, Indonesia and Botswana sections as we never went to these countries. It's possible that there are now a few redundant links still pointing to these sections.

31 May 2006: We got back to the UK on 23 May, after an incredible year of globetrotting. We're taking a "break" of sorts, seeing family and friends. But our travel days aren't quite over yet and we're also planning a tour of Eastern Europe.

2 July 2006: We're now touring around Eastern Europe, something we had in the backs of our minds for a long time but weren't sure we'd be able, and willing, to do. Fortunately the answer to both was "yes!" We spent June seeing family and friends, and in the process did some research about where we'd like to live after London. Before we come back home "for good" we're having our travel "pudding" and will be going to Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Czechia (prefer that to "the Czech Republic"), Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Moldova and Bulgaria. We have now updated the final pages of South Africa, and also finally plugged the gap of a few days in Cambodia we hadn't got round to writing up. More pictures and diary updates to follow in the next couple of weeks.

3 August 2006: We're back in Warsaw after a month of touring through northern Poland and the "Baltics" (see Eastern Europe, part 1), with a brief visit to Brussels. The plan is to spend a bit more time in Poland before continuing to Czechia, Slovakia, and so on (see above) - we'll see how far we get before we have to make our turn for home. It's the final chapter on this world trip, honest!

27 August 2006: We started "part 2" of our Eastern European travels in Warsaw, and meandered around the eastern parts of Poland and then down to Krakow and the stunning High Tatras. We dipped into Slovakia, then back to Zakopane in Poland, and then made a detour to Vienna. Followed by another dip into Slovakia to visit Bratislava, and now we have reached Hungary. We're spending a few days in Budapest and next will be touring around Hungary for a few weeks. Then it'll be time to make out "turn" and start to head back. Romania, Bulgaria and Moldova have been dropped as we'd rather see the countries we do have time for properly rather than rush through them. On our way back we're planning to visit Vienna again and "Czechia". We should be back to the UK around the latter part of September. As for web site updates, we've been uploading pictures but still have to add the diary pages, to follow asap!

12 October 2006: At the end of September we finally completed our world trip, returning to the UK on a very pleasant ferry crossing from Zeebrugge to Hull. We spent the next couple of weeks meeting up with family and friends and we're now in Scarborough, back in "our barn", staying with Nessie's sister Caroline and Andy. Soon we will be heading up to Scotland to see how we like it there and whether it'll become a more permanent home. We're now busy job- and house-hunting. It's still too early days to spend much time in contemplation of our incredible trip, and it'll take us a while to complete the site with our Eastern European diaries, but the pictures are gradually getting there.

19 Nov 2006: Time seems to be flying by again. It's hard to imagine that it's been almost two months since we came back. We have now settled into a nice flat in the seaside town of North Berwick, east of Edinburgh, and are enjoying this period of "calm before the storm" exploring our new environment, Scotland.

18 Sep 2007: Gradually the site is getting updated with the remaining travel sections, but the "blog" section remains empty, although I have been keeping a diary... just a matter of time before I get round to adding it in!

22 Jun 2009: The Blog/Diary section will probably remain as it is for now, and eventually be removed. But I do hope to post the Libya travel diaries and pictures at some point!
