December 2006

Another patchy entry for this month also.

Mon 4 Dec

Another walk with mark, very wet and I turn back partway through, deer, stay overnight at Clachaig Inn in Glencoe. Copied from Mark’s site:

"Pretty shocking day. Stef & I attempted Stob Ghabhar (via the NE ridge approach). Stef's enthusiasm deserted him at the top of Corrie Toaig & he turned back saying 'you must be mad'. He may have a point. The summit ridge was actually quite good fun with some snow over the narrow section. Reversed ascent route from the summit."

Tue 5 Dec

Second day of walking, steep climb. Copied from Mark’s site:

"An even worse day to day, although the stay in the Clachaig was pleasant. I mentioned to Stef that 'normally when its like this we go ice climbing at the Ice Factor' which made him surprisingly keen on a walk, despite the dreadful conditions. So we had a recy to Corrie Nan Lochan, where there was an encouraging amount of (soggy) snow. I came as close as I have to getting blown of a mountain today!"

6 Dec

Beach walk to tea rock

9 Dec

Mark and Eliza came over and we went to the Scottish Seabird Centre to watch the Cinema Club’s screening of a classic James Stewart film … (just wish I could remember what it’s called!) (A Wonderful Life)

Mon 11 Dec

Another walk with Mark, in the Cairngorms for a change, steep and muddy and I bottled out, overnight in Braemar (check)

A new pose?"We had a very late start on account of horrendous traffic in Edinburgh and quickly shelved plans of heading to the Northern Corries in favour of (nearer) Glenshee. We parked just beyond the Ski station and set out for Glas Maol via one of its norteastern corries (45 mph winds again!). Kind of ran out of time and headed back from the summit ridge without actually getting to the summit. Never mind, I'll get there using the ski lift some time …"

Tue 12 Dec

Copied from Mark’s site:

Glas Tulaichean, yet more UFB"Terrible weather again (what a month, flooding everywhere) but had a crack at Glas Tulaichean from the Spittal of Glenshee. The guy at the Dalmunzie Hotel thought we were mad and wouldn't take our parking-money. After a long walk-in, fording several high burns , we finally gave up - too many rivers to cross. That's when the fun started. We decided to head up Carn Bhinnean on sight but the ascent proved quite steep and, covered in wet snow … what can I say? Stef did not thank me. The wheels came off the trip a little and we escaped off the hill as quick as possible and headed for home. All unfinished Business now of course."

16 Dec

Beccie and John visited, we went to see Concorde again, headed into Edinburgh the next day and had drinks at Dome (?) and other swanky places.

Not sure exactly when it was but we went down to Scarborough for a short visit of a couple of days. The weather was unusual, with lots of very dense fog covering most of England. The drive down from North Berwick down to Yorkshire was smooth and scenic, “as usual”, and we drove through the scenic bits around Thirsk and up the steep Staxton (?) bank. From the higher ground we drove east and gradually downhill. Ahead of us we could see a thick blanket of fog covering the whole landscape. It was a very unusual sight to see this thick white fog. We disappeared into it, the light faded and it turned grey and with hardly any visibility, and it was freezing cold. During our visit we went Bud-walking with Caz and had some beautiful views of the frozen fog on the tree branches. Shame I didn’t have the camera with me because it would have made for some stunning pictures. That fog continued to linger over England until we went to Belgium around Christmas.

Festive season

23 Dec

Travel chaos - dense fog, we took the precaution of also booking Hull-Zeebrugge ferry, which was just as well as flights got cancelled, but I was happy as it meant we got to go on the ferry again. Stopped off at Scarborough, drive down to Hull, nice ferry crossing.

24 Dec – 26 Dec

Arr. Zeebrugge and drive to Wezembeek, and briefly met Mischa, Greg and Woody before they left for airport. Christmas with Mama and a couple of nice days at home, Ness and I visited the Christmas market at St Katelijneplein, with lots of stalls (dulce de leche from an Argentinean, boudins/pensen from a Belgian one, maple syrup and bison paté from a Canadian one, etc.), and went on the Big Wheel. I only realised as we were halfway up that we were sat in a tiny exposed little cabin high above the ground and the girls in the next one along laughed at my efforts to look relaxed (grimacing and clenching the rails). Also very cold at the top, and no views in the thick evening mist.

27 Dec

Drive to Zeebrugge, with shopping stop at Terneuzen for Dutchables, nice ferry crossing back to Hull

28 Dec

Drive back to North Berwick, and dinner at Osteria for my birthday

31 Dec

New year's eve. Down to Solihull, New Year’s eve concert "proms" style
