Route

We only made a relatively brief visit to Cambodia. We had intended to fly straight to Malaysia from Vietnam, but Tim and Erica were so enthusiastic about Angkor, and we had started to rely on their judgment as "like minds". It was pretty easy to join up a tour along the Mekong that took us across the border at Chau Doc. After a chaotic but hassle-free border crossing we continued by boat along the Mekong and switched to a bus for the last leg to Phnom Penh.

After spending a bit of time in Phnom Penh we flew to Siem Reap - quick, easy and still cheap. Siem Reap is a town gone nuts with hotel development to cater for the hordes wishing to see the temple ruins of Angkor. Despite the mass tourism, it has to be said that Angkor is one of the highlights of southeast Asia, and the superlatives in the guidebooks are warranted. It also helped enormously that we had an affable guide, a recommendation from Tim & Erica (if you want his details, get in touch with us). This helped to get the right balance between info about the temples (there are many!), more recent Cambodian history and just normal banter. We also made a trip to see the floating villages on the large Tonlé Sap lake.

To fly to Malaysia we had to go via Phnom Penh again, and then it was on to Kuala Lumpur. As with Laos, we're aware that there is a whole lot more to both countries to see.
