Canada

Our route is shown in red (click map for a more detailed version)

Canada is a massive country and we took our time travelling through it. In the end, four months was just enough for a "taster" although in the process we do feel we got to know it quite well. Canada really got under our skins.

Update 22 Sep 2005: Having started in Montréal, after over seven weeks in Canada we're still making our way east - yes, east, not west! We have at last arrived at St. John's in Newfoundland, the furthest point east in North America and will now be starting the enormous journey west and north, aiming to arrive in Vancouver. A crossing of the arctic circle is on the list - practicalities are being worked on, sort of...

Update 23 Nov 2005: We have now reached the halfway point of our world trip, in diary terms. We'll write about our reflections on all that separately somewhere else. In Canadian terms we have at long last reached the west coast - although we haven't yet seen the Pacific here (we're on a campground a little to the east of Vancouver) so it's not the "official" completion of the crossing of Canada. We never did make it north of the arctic circle and there are so many other places that we would have liked to see, but "it'll do" for now! We plan to spend the last two weeks in Canada around Vancouver and Vancouver Island, while we try and deal with the sale of Mortimer and planning for the onward journey. We're making some changes to our itinerary for Asia as Indonesia is beginning to sound like a very dodgy place to go to as westerners.

CBC, Canadian radio stations on the web. For example, Radio One, Prince Edward Island: www.cbc.ca/pei.

Sleeping in my car, by Roxette, on the album "Don't bore us, get to the chorus!" Included for (we hope) obvious reasons!
The Last of the Gentlemen Adventurers, by Edward Beauclerk Maurice, who was one of the last fur traders of the Hudson's Bay Company and here he relates his own story and adventures in the Arctic.
Le pont de Londres (London Bridge), by Louis Gauthier, a Québec author. Came across this in a bookshop in Tadoussac.
Original Newfoundland Gold (CD), a compilation of popular Newfie songs, including Aunt Martha's Sheep, You'll never stop drinking that Newfoundland brew, Goofie Newfie, Thank God we're surrounded by water, Snow white dove and Take me home William Carson. We covered many miles in Canada singing along to these tracks!
The Shipping News, film with Kevin Spacey in principal role. Most of the film is situated on Newfie.

Edmonton Rodeo
Toronto Argonauts
