China

Route

We flew from Vancouver to Hong Kong, still the natural "entry-point" for China, and southeast Asia as a whole, certainly for us with our OneWorld Explorer tickets (HK is Cathay Pacific's "hub"). Hong Kong was a shock to the senses after Canada, and we walked around in a bit of a daze! After a few days, we took a ferry across to much more laid-back Macau. That is, laid back in Chinese terms which we had slowly started to adopt. From here we crossed into China "proper", as both Hong Kong and Macau still have "Special Administrative Region" while China is busy digesting the former colonies. Crossing into the "Red" China was a special experience. We first headed for the city of Guangzhou (aka Canton), and made our way by bus through the southern provinces of Guangdong, Guangxi and then by night-train on christmas eve into the province of Yunnan, to the city of Kunming. We spent christmas in Kunming, celebrating it with Ellie and Eric who we had met on the train. At Kunming we sorted out visas for Laos and Vietnam and then followed more or less in Ellie and Eric's footsteps to Dali and on to Lijiang, both historic old towns (well, bits of them). We spent New Year's Eve in stunning Tiger Leaper "George", dancing Naxi music with the locals and Ellie and Eric and Geoff the "Drunk Aussie". Next we headed back down to Lijiang and took a flight to connect the dots to Jinghong and buses it to the southern border with Laos, crossing at Mohan.
