Route

We travelled overland from Máncora in Peru to Machala in southern Ecuador, for an overnight stop. From here we travelled by bus into the hills and mountains of the Andes, to the small town of Loja, and then south to the village of Vilcabamba, in an idyllic valley. Then we started making our way north following the Avenue of the Volcanoes, stopping at picturesque Cuenca, home of the Panama hat, at Riobamba (near the Chimborazo volcano), and at Latacunga (near Cotopaxi volcano). We passed through Quito for a flight down to Quayaquil, hectic and hot, and bussed to the beaches at Salinas, and along the coast to Puerto Lopez for some whale-watching. A long-ride across the jungle hills and misty mountains to Quito where we spent the last few days, with an obligatory but fun visit to the Mitad del Mundo, straddling the north and south hemisphere. From here we took a flight to Montréal via Miami, to say au revoir to South America for now.
