Route

From Montevideo we flew to Asunción, via Buenos Aires. We then stayed a few days in Asunción before heading south to Encarnación, to visit the Jesuit ruins in the south of the country. It had been our plan to then head up to Ciudad del Este, Paraguay's contraband capital, to see the massive Itaipu dam, before returning to Asunción but as it proved so difficult to make the connections we just returned directly to the capital. While in Asunción on our second visit we did a one-day tour of sights around the capital, the so-called Circuito de Oro. Next we took a long bus ride into the Wild West, the Chaco, a vast flat "green hell" of thorn bushes inhabited only by Indian tribes and colonies of Mennonites. We stayed in the little Mennonite town of Filadelfia and made some visits in the area. There is a very rough road and difficult border crossing with Bolivia but we weren't quite feeling up to that and returned to Asunción.
