What will the weather be like when we're there?

Whilst it would be great to follow the sun, its pretty hard to hit each country at the best time of year weather wise. The weather brings its own challenges so its good to get a bit of a mix and a bit of planning and research into weather and climate makes sense. Our plans take us to some places when it will be hot and humid and to others when it could be freezing cold, but at least we have some idea of what kind of clothes to pack (or not). There are lots of information sources on the web and in travel guides, but a handy little book we came across at Stanfords was Weather to Travel.

Whilst this did not drive our plans (after 6 different versions we still came back to version 1 which we had set before looking at the book!) it did help to shape our tactics. Dutifully copying the little rainfall and comfort charts from the book for our destinations and rough itinerary produced the charts below.

In theory we should have decent weather for most countries, with the exception of hitting Indonesia and Malaysia during the wettest part of the year. Quite what that will mean in practice we will no doubt find out.

Update 27 Nov 2005: Indonesia is now off the list, and we never did make it to Bolivia. Instead we expect to be in China, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia during December, January, February. We'll now hit Malaysia around mid-February.

This chart is based on the weather patterns in the main cities so it is only a very rough guide. For example, in Perú we expect to find conditions ranging from cold and dry high-altitude Andean climate to hot and humid lowlands.
